Pallet Wood
June 7, 2024
First successful pallet breakdown!
We upcycle used untreated* pallets all over the place here. I made our compost bays out of them, and they keep our firewood racks off the ground. I use them to partition storage areas for soil and straw. And spots for chicken feed and bedding, and the leaves we mulch the gardens with. We have a lot of projects, and no real outbuildings or garage. Pallets have been good to us…
But I’ve always used pallets as-is. Stacked or screwed together. Quick and dirty and done. I hadn’t tackled taking the pallets apart to transform them back into raw materials. My neighbour gave me a pile of hers last fall though, and that was exactly my plan – to reclaim their wood as building material. And make use of the trees that have already been cut down for as long as possible, for as much as possible.
Taking the pallet apart and denailing it took some time. But it was still waaaaaaaaay faster than growing a new tree.
Happy Friday folks 💚♻️
*Pallets may be treated with all sorts of things. Research recommended. And/or use them for projects where it doesn’t matter too much. 👍
